Evaluation
I think that my front cover and contents page are quite a success as I managed to apply my research findings within them to help make them as good as they can be. I had a colour scheme and I managed to follow it throughout the production. I think that it reaches the target audience of college females interested in fashion reasonably well as the font, colours and image used are quite feminine. However, I don’t think it says enough about fashion to be able to encourage somebody to buy the issue. The conventions are successfully applied and I am overall happy with my outcome, but know there are areas for improvement. I learnt that getting the right colours together can make the magazine look so much more professional and also where you place the text to keep the image the centre of attention.
I am pleased with how my ‘HCollege’ masthead worked by having the ‘C’ entwine with the ‘o’. I think this made the front cover look more professional and also original. Also, for the masthead it is big, bold and bright with an additional shadow effect which I think makes it stand out more and catch people’s eye. This is an aspect of the preliminary task which I would like to use on my final production.
In terms of content, I don’t believe there is enough of it. Most
magazines and the magazines that I have analysed have more text on the front
page to fill the reader with information to then draw them into the magazine and
consequently end up buying it.
My contents page I am also reasonably happy with although, like the front cover, I don’t think that there is enough content; it doesn’t seem to be very full and exciting even though the colour scheme has been followed. Ways I could improve this is by making the fonts bigger, exaggerated and more eye catching. Also, I could add more textual information as well as some more fun things to draw the reader in more. Moreover, for my final contents page I could add something like a message from the editor to make the magazine more personal to the audience.
The images I used on the contents page are nice but for my final one I think I’d either have more images, bigger images or images that are very different from each other to emphasise the different areas and aspects of the magazine.
Finally, I have learnt that making a magazine is a lot harder than I originally anticipated. By having this preliminary task, it has made me more aware of what I should and shouldn’t do. Also, I have learnt how to use Photoshop and InDesign successfully which will definitely help me with my final project during the production phase.
